Joia Speciale was nominated for a 2011 Emmy for her cinematography on the award-winning A&E TV series Intervention. She has also worked on other documentary shows for A&E such as The Interrogators, Runaway Squad, and Sand Hogs, as well as Mystery Diagnosis for Discovery, and Jerry Seinfeld’s new web series Comedian’s in Cars Getting Coffee. As a documentary DP she has shot several films, including A Hole In The Sky about 9/11 for German Television and Robin Hitchcock: Sex Food, Death … and Insects for Sundance Channel. She has also operated on such award winning films as Waiting for Superman, The September Issue, Maria Full of Grace, Heights, and the award-winning series Iconoclasts, Real Sex and American Masters. Concurrently she has produced and directed short documentaries for corporations, non-profits and behind the scenes of major Feature Films like Garden State for Paramount Pictures. She began her career in the edit room for Maysles Films working on films like Christo’s Umbrellas, The Getty Museum, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Films and Paradise Lost 1. She now teaches cinematography for the graduate documentary program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
